Professional eavesdropping detection is a multi-step task, requiring meticulousness and concentration and, above all, knowledge, experience and time.
There is no magic wand with which you can wave and within seconds answer the question of whether there are surveillance devices in the area being investigated.
How long does it take to carry out a decent wiretap detection?
The topic needs to be broken down into several smaller ones. The popular phrase eavesdropping detection may indeed refer to the detection of eavesdroppers themselves, but it usually covers a much broader service of detecting and locating any present and therefore active and inactive surveillance devices and programmes.
Some activities are always undertaken. Others, such as looking for locators in vehicles must be specifically ordered.
It can be assumed that it takes an experienced team approximately four to six hours for every 100 m2 of space to check a facility for the presence of wiretaps and cameras. The discrepancy in time is due to the differences encountered in the places examined, e.g. furnishings, purpose, access.
What is an anti-tap control really?
Eavesdropping detection can be divided into the following stages:
- analysis of the radio frequency spectrum inside and outside the facility,
- inspection of the facility by means of optical detection devices, – thermal imaging, camera detector, etc.
- inspection of the equipment in the premises for the presence of inactive and/or non-transmitting equipment,
- physical examination of all equipment on the premises by means of mirrors, torches, inspection cameras, tool kit,
- in the case of vehicles, additionally checking for the presence of position locating devices,
- a report on the activities carried out, with post-inspection recommendations.
Additional activities may be performed during the detection, such as checking power and IT networks, checking mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets and computers for the presence of spyware.
Anti-spyware checks have a set framework of scenarios according to which the checks are performed, nevertheless they are always tailored to the individual needs of the client and the conditions of the facility. It is not a quick survey of the premises, but a set of activities using various detection devices.

Electronic devices used for everyday communication are also sometimes the target of attack. It is not only viruses that pose a threat, but above all programs that extract all kinds of data. A licence for a popular smartphone programme from a Chinese supplier costs just a few hundred zlotys. Spyphone-type programmes collect a variety of data from the infected phone. The information intercepted includes conversations, SMS and MMS messages, websites visited and content typed, and chats from Whatsapp messengers, etc.
Due to the variety of spyware and mobile device operating systems, it is not possible to carry out an on-the-spot check on the spot. It is necessary to bring the equipment to an expert IT specialist, and the mobile device check itself can take anywhere from an hour to even several days.
