Detection of surveillance devices can be divided into several stages, which overlap in scope to achieve the highest possible level of effectiveness. If you are short of equipment, you can replace some of the steps with a thorough sweep of your surroundings using a mirror, torch, slotted wedges and a set of screwdrivers. This will be a more strenuous and invasive method, but is it less effective?
What is the price of wiretap detection?
A reliably performed service of checking premises for the presence of surveillance devices requires equipment and experience. These two components make eavesdropping detection a rather expensive service and therefore not accessible to everyone. For example, checking a 50 sq m flat costs approx. For example, checking a 50-square-metre apartment costs approx. PLN 2,500; if we add travel to a distant location, the amount rises to more than 3,000. Checking an office space, e.g. 600 m2 , is already an expense of PLN 30,000. While companies often have the means to do this, not every household budget can bear an additional burden of several thousand. This is why I decided to propose a solution to the problem of eavesdropping, let’s call it in the ECO class.
Are only the most expensive detectors worth something?
Some of the devices used in detection have their less sophisticated cheaper counterparts. Cheap does not mean useless, however, inferring from the indications of such cheaper devices may cause trouble for an inexperienced person. An eavesdropping detection kit includes not only so-called ‘must have’ devices, but also those which significantly improve the performance of the check. By resigning from this equipment, we have to accept a considerable lengthening of the checking process and the need for much greater physical effort, but the detection itself can be performed with a similar level of confidence that would be achieved by a professional team with full equipment.
So what will be essential in wiretap detection?
It depends. The scope of checking and the detection devices used is selected according to the specific case, because detection is done differently in a passenger vehicle and in an office. If we are looking for devices allowing eavesdropping or live monitoring, the emphasis will be on looking for radio signals, and due to the relatively high power consumption of such solutions, we will look for places where such eavesdropping or camera would have permanent access to mains power. It is a different matter if we are looking for dictaphones or video recorders, as they do not transmit anything. In this case, you will have to concentrate on a very detailed physical search of the place being checked. Professionals will use NJLD detectors, thermal imaging and listen using the on ST-600 to see if there is anything hidden nearby. An amateur without such equipment for tens or hundreds of thousands of zloty will be forced to do everything manually, with increased suspicion of any unknown device. And if it turns out that there are many electronic devices in the room, such as radios, decoders, speakers, clocks, weather stations, etc., consider unscrewing their housings and looking for eavesdroppers inside.
And how is Kowalski supposed to know what a wiretap looks like?
The answer to this question can be provided by research carried out on the Internet, on the websites of detective shops such as Alfatronik.com.pl or Spyshop.pl, where it is possible to familiarise oneself with the appearance and principle of operation of typical eavesdroppers, cameras, dictaphones and locating devices. You can also look for information on foreign aliexpress.com or portals such as Niebezpiecznik.pl or forums such as elektroda.pl etc.
Returning to devices with radio communication, you will need a detector, but not one for PLN 45 from a Chinese portal. The simplest device for detecting radio signals is the RD30, available for around £600. This device has a simple signal strength indicator, sensitivity settings and, as an additional feature, a window and LEDs for detecting hidden lenses. One device will allow you to check whether there are hidden cameras in a particular place and, to some extent, whether there are devices from which any radio transmission is coming out. Keep in mind that the RD30 is a very simple device and does not have advanced signal identification features – this is up to the user and can be a hassle. Detection requires basic knowledge of common solutions like WiFi, Bluetooth, GSM, 4G and 5G networks.
Other eavesdropping devices, including dictaphones, well concealed, will not be revealed by the aforementioned detector, as well as others of its ilk. Without specialised equipment, the search for recording devices devoid of a lens comes down to the aforementioned detailed physical inspection, dismantling the devices present.
It can be helpful to ask yourself some questions when checking your surroundings by paying attention to the items present: Where did I get this from, How long has it been standing here? Do I need it? Why does it have power? If you don’t know the answer to any of these questions, it will make sense to take a close look or even dispose of the suspect object.
Is someone eavesdropping on me from outside?
This is possible, but usually requires a high degree of financial determination and/or extensive access to the place or object in question. It is unlikely that someone, e.g. in a neighbourhood dispute, would be targeted with a laser microphone, the price of which can reach several million zlotys. It is equally unlikely that e.g. the flat of the neighbour above, whom we have known for 10 years, would be used to drop a microphone probe or lens through a ventilation riser. It is always necessary to assess how expensive and difficult it would be to use a particular type of eavesdropping device in a given case.
How effective are stand-alone wiretap detections?
The answer depends on who has the knowledge and persistence to solve the problem. With full access to the area in question, with no time constraints on action and with knowledge widely available on the internet about wiretapping, it can be assumed that self-detection of wiretaps can be just as effective as that done by professionals.
