a wiretap to a car

What should you do if you find a wiretap in your car?

Maintaining privacy in the car is a common concern – not only because hands-free conversations can be heard outside the vehicle, but also because of the easy availability and low cost of eavesdropping devices. So what should you do if you find that your car is bugged or has a GPS fitted?

Is it easy to fit a wiretap to a car?

The answer is yes. When it comes to GPS it is very easy to put it under a vehicle. All it takes is for the car to be left outside a shopping centre or parked somewhere by the roadside, and 10 minutes later the unaware owner can already be driving around with a GPS locator on.

Similarly, although a little more complicated, is to put a wiretap inside a car. This is most often the case in family and business matters. For example, a jealous partner or a superior concerned about the loyalty of an employee using a company vehicle may leave a wiretap. It is enough for such a person to have access to the vehicle once in a while, driving as a passenger or even going to the car on the pretext of taking shopping.

Who finds their car bugged?

According to information from our customers, they often find out that they are ‘driving bugged’ completely by accident, e.g. when using the services of a hand car wash, ordering a detailing or picking up a car after repair from a mechanic. It is the employees performing various jobs on the vehicle that involve looking in unusual places, who most often come across unusual items or installations left in the car completely by accident.

One example is a GPS that ‘falls out’ during an oil change in the car while the vehicle is on the jack. Another example is a dictaphone discovered by an employee of a car wash, who, curious about an unusual item in the cabin, informed his customer about it. It is possible to list such examples for a long time, however, it should be remembered that sending a car to a hand car wash is not the same as a professional car check.

Why use a professional detection service?

Sometimes the person attempting to monitor a location or eavesdrop on conversations shows more determination and ingenuity when installing a wiretap. In such a case, the chance of revealing the eavesdropping without specialised equipment is much lower. In addition, one of the strengths of the detection service is a detailed report, including a description of the activities carried out and the equipment used. A key element of the report is detailed documentation of the wiretapping device found, including data on its parameters and methods of operation. The report, together with the wiretap or GPS locator found, can be handed over to the relevant authorities and constitutes valuable evidence in a future court case.
